Like most youngsters, I had my own list of ‘things to love’ when I was younger. I found that I kept to this list as I grew up, looking for these things that I deemed important, to make my life full, and meaningful, and happy. And like this childhood list, I have one of Mexico that I created when I first visited, and that I’ve kept close for the time when I would be able to settle there.
Let me share that list:
1. I love the culture as a whole. I love how so much history lives at the same time as so much modernity. The Aztec ruins are a stone’s throw away from some of the more Industrial buildings. Old, cobblestone sidewalks frame modern cemented roads. Rustic architecture houses internet connections and cable TV.
2. I love how there is so much variety in food. I love the vibrant markets, with sweet, big, tropical fruit, I love the fresh vegetables. I love chili!
3. I love how you can have desert, mountain, beach, and lake all in one place. I love how, because of this, you can choose the kind of getaway you want to experience.
4. I love how the local folk embody “the Latin way”. I love how a lot of what colors their personalities are not based on what you can see or touch. This kind of spirituality, I find, enriches one’s soul.
5. Finally, I love how the country holds both a wealth of possibility for enjoyment and the promise of peace and happiness.
It is because of this list that I have never forgotten Mexico. It is because of this love that I have chosen Mexico as the place I want to live in from now on. And I would dare say that for those who doubt Mexico’s charm, come and visit. You will certainly fall in love with the country, as I have.
